Curing the common cold?
Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 02:08PM I'm one of those "I don't get sick" people. Making my living in a busy commercial gym, with my constant exposure to runny noses, sneezing and unclean hands on barbells, dumbells and machines, I long ago decided my immune system must be top-notch. Of course I supplement and eat to maintain a healthy eco-system in my body, but with long hours and early morning wake-up calls, I get run down.
The last two or three days I've been dragging. Sore throat, constantly tired and bone-weary. Didn't miss any workouts, and in fact enjoyed a great strength workout Wednesday, a couple of CrossFit sessions and two Concept-2 rows. But by yesterday I was definitely sick; sore sinuses, runny nose, scratchy and hurting throat. After leaving the gym at mid-day, I got in a good nap mid-afternoon. Woke up feeling pretty good. Brewed four cups of strong Peet's coffee, drank them with my usual butter and coconut oil, then made my way to Friday evening CrossFit! Yeah, it was either a great idea or a very bad thing, but I went.
Fran. Need I elaborate? After my lengthy warm-up, then some lifting, it was Fran time. I was toasted by the workout, of course, but felt strangely better in my head, lungs and throat. Last night I chilled, ate a good dinner of vegetables, white rice and eggs, sipped a half bottle of red wine, and went to bed with a slug of Nyquil! Hmmm, red wine and Nyquil; could that be the secret?
Slept 9 hours! An unbelievable event; I never sleep that long. My usual is five or six hours, been that way my entire adult life. An hour after getting up, with three cups of coffee in me, I was back to CrossFit! Power cleans, and a 2000 meter row interrupted every minute by ever-more burpees. Now my throat and chest are normal; my nose is running but I feel like I broke that cold before it could get the best of me! Or I'm a fortunate soul and my health and fitness are carrying the day.
